"Puss in Bootsthe
Panto"
"Panto's coming
back! "Puss in Bootsthe Panto!" will open December
26, 2001 at Santa Barbara's beautiful Lobero Theatre for what promises
to be the noisiest, funniest and most fun party of the holiday season.
This
Third Annual Professional Santa Barbara Family Panto from Panto
Productions follows the smashing success of "Jack
and the Beanstalk, the Panto!" in 1999 and last year's
"Goldilocks, 3 Bears.. and then some!"
A holiday custom in Britain for 300 years, Panto is becoming Santa
Barbara's most popular family tradition of the holiday season.
The critics raved about
it - Barney Brantingham, Santa Barbara News Press, " loved
Goldilocks
brilliantly done!" D. J. Palladino, Independent,
" Pantastic
. fun for the whole family!" Michael
Smith, Santa Barbara News Press, " The show bowls you over
with its high spirited velocity
. fun for kids and grown-ups
alike!"
The audiences love it
- "We all love the Panto, Great grandmothers, grandparents,
children, teenagers - what a great treat for all!" "Fabulous
entertainment!" "Two hours of sheer delight!" "Let's
do this every year!" "Panto is the best!"
Panto
is a form of theatre that involves standard story lines, slapstick,
music, dance, magic, audience participation, spectacular costumes
and stage effects. Fairy tales became common Panto themes during
the Victorian era, although Panto keeps it's multi-layered approach
and is just as entertaining for adults as it is for children. It
is traditionally a holiday entertainment with a special appeal for
family audiences, aged 2 - 102.
Many of those involved
with Santa Barbara's two previous Pantos will be returning, including
director Michael Ashton, fresh from the U.K. with the hilarious
script he has written and Konrad Kono, who again contributes his
upbeat musical direction. Stay tuned: Ashton and Kono have written
irresistable original songs for Puss.
Santa Barbara's own
Karin delaPena, who played Jack in Santa Barbara's first Panto,
has been chosen to play Puss. She will lead a sparkling cast of
favorites from last year's hit show, including Kevin Symons, along
with some talented new actors. Choreographer Victoria Finlayson,
costume designer Janet Doran-Veevers and lighting designer Vickie
Scott will again contribute their talents.
When last year's audiences
were asked to vote for this year's Panto, they overwhelmingly selected
"Puss in Boots", a beloved yarn about an ingenious cat,
who secures a fortune, and a wife, for his penniless master.
Tickets for this holiday
season's performances will go on sale June 23 at the Lobero Theatre.
Prices will range from $13 - 30 and there will be another costume
contest with teddy bear prizes, and (as a beloved part of tradition)
kids will again be invited onto the stage as part of the show.
Look out for "Puss"
appearances at the Summer Solstice Parade and Festival, and elsewhere
this summer and fall.
